Probiotic Acidophilus Supplement

A probiotic acidophilus supplement can help in the production of some vitamins, like folic acid, niacin, and pyridoxine, which are all B group vitamins. Acidophilus can also help with the breakdown of bile so that those amino acids used in it can be reused by the body.
Acidophilus is a naturally occurring gut bacteria that is also found in the vagina. Unfortunately, it is destroyed by antibiotics, and contraceptive creams. A probiotic acidophilus supplement is recommended to repopulate the micro flora in the bowel.
When acidpohilus bacteria digest food, they produce hydrogen peroxide, lactic acid, and other byproducts. These metabolic byproducts help protect the gut from other harmful microorganisms like candida yeast. And the nutrients that beneficial probiotic acidophilus supplement bacteria use means there is less available for the harmful bacteria to thrive on.

There are many different types of probiotics used in supplements, and they seem to have different effects on certain conditions.
Research results for Probiotics
A study conducted at the University of Toronto measured the effect of chronic stress on the levels of harmful bacteria in the gut, and whether probiotic supplements could help. Whilst the study was done on rats, it was designed to mimic what would happen in the human gut.
The results of the study were interesting. They found that the rats exposed to chronic stress had more harmful bacteria in the gut as a result of the stress. But they also found that the rats exposed to stress but which also took the probiotic supplements, had only 20% of these harmful bacteria.
The study concluded that:
Probiotics prevent the harmful bacteria from adhering to the walls of the gut
They also prevent the migration of those bacteria into the lymph system, which would in turn initiate an immune response from the body
The rats in this study were fed a mixture containing lactobacillus rhamnosus and lactobacillus helveticus.
Probiotics and Stress
Another study was designed to test the effectiveness of probiotics in reducing the impact of stress on the gastrointestinal system. The particular probiotic used was a high quality one in that it was designed to survive the gastric acid that can kill off the bacteria before they have a chance to act. It did this by using a micro encapsulation technology to improve probiotic delivery.
This study was done on people that were prone to stress. They found that 49% of the people taking the probiotic reported a 49% decrease in gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and nausea. This was a placebo controlled study and the participants did know whether they were taking the probiotic or not. The study used a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and another type of probiotic.
So, a good quality probiotic acidophilus supplement is beneficial for protecting the body from stress related symptoms of nausea and abdominal pain.
Probiotics and IBS
IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is a chronic gut problem whose symptoms include cramping, constipation, and diarrhea. A study conducted in Ireland has shown that one strain of probiotiocs, the Bifidobacterium infantis, was as effective as the pharmacological drugs Zelnorm (tegaserod) and Lotronex (alosetron), which have been approved for the treatment of IBS. Study participants who had the probiotic drink daily had less abdominal symptoms and discomfort, though it did not cure the condition entirely. But probiotics are very safe, compared to drugs.
The type of probiotic used is important, at least for specific conditions like IBS. For example, another strain the same team tested, Lactobacillus salivarius, had no effect on the symptoms of IBS sufferers. That's not to say it's not effective for other things, just not for IBS. So IBS sufferers should look for probiotic alternatives to probiotic acidophilus supplements to ease their symtpoms.
One of the researchers, Dr Quigley said: "Our hypothesis is that low-grade inflammation is a factor in IBS and that certain probiotic bacteria can reduce this inflammation. We have some evidence to support this theory because our paper shows a change in cytokine ratios after the probiotic treatment."
Two studies have found a link between changes in the bacteria in the gut, such as it being killed off through antibiotic use, was associated with an increased sensitivity to allergens in the environment. This could be allergens inhaled through the lungs or nose, or mould. The studies were done on rats, but they show a definite link, and as such may provide a clue as to what happens in people.
One of the researchers, Dr Huffnagle, said: "One short course of antibiotics is not going to give everyone allergies. But if you are taking antibiotics while your diet consists of white bread and fried food, you are not going to maintain the healthy micro flora balance you need to maintain tolerance. If you inhale mold spores or pollen during this period, our studies indicate you are much more likely to become sensitized to them."
